Hi. I'm new to substitute teaching and I'm from a small district. Substitute teaching doesn't have the professional status I would like in my district, but I want to change that. I think this is a good place to start. I know there are other subs who have become very professional, and I was hoping to get a few insights and suggestions. If you have any, please post them. Thanks.

scaroll, just hang in there. You need to find the right districts that will treat you with respect. That's the nice thing about being a sub (especially in an urban area) is that you can "shop around" for the districts you like. Good luck!

Educate yourself - that's the best way to be seen as a professional. If you dress nicely, be responsible, and come prepared your district will take notice.

Thanks for all the advice. Substitutes are in high demand here, and so sometimes the expectations are lowered just to find subs. But I think you're right--if I dress professionally, they'll start to take notice.

As far as educating myself, what journals can I keep up on? Or maybe I can get something online?
